The Poole Passion to feature on BBC Songs Of Praise!
The Poole Passion will Feature in BBC1’s Songs of Praise on Easter Sunday!
The Poole Passion (TPP) is preparing for their biennial play, which is to be featured on BBC’s Songs of Praise. Their play Through the Eyes of a Child will be performed on 15-19th March at 7pm. It not too late to join us and even if you don’t wish to take part please come and watch one of the performances.
TPP has been going from strength to strength since its inception in 2009. Last year – as the first UK play to be admitted to Europassion – a group of 9 from Poole Passion went to Sordevolo in Italy to attend the Europassion Conference. This weekend they are hosting the National Passion Trust conference at Parkstone United Reformed Church.
The Poole Passion has received the fantastic news that they have received an Arts Grant from the Arts Council of England and also support from the Borough of Poole Arts Service along with a variety of local sponsors who are sponsoring particular scenes in the play!
‘We are delighted to gain funding for our project especially in the current difficult climate and it is a credit to our sponsors for recognizing the truly inclusive nature of this work. This means we can take ‘artistic risks’ including having outside projection work and involving more professional artists to support this event. We will also be able to take on young Arts Interns aged between 17 and 25 and it’s a great opportunity for us to grow’. Sharon Muiruiri – Artistic Director and the Play’s author.
Our Community play’s subject is the Passion of the Christ. It resonates to those of the Christian faith, no faith and to other faiths, as the story is a vehicle for a powerful and enduring truth, that of the redemptive aspect of love. A twelve year old child, dressed in contemporary clothing, moves through the scenes asking ‘What are they doing to him?’ ‘Why is this happening?’ whilst the remainder of the cast are dressed in traditional biblical costume. 2016 will see our fifth production and each time we perform we find something special in the story. This year the actor playing Jesus is Irish so we have a Celtic theme running through the production.
This project involves a compelling story, two wonderful local venues, a participatory procession, holographic light works, powerful actors including a mix of professional and amateurs, amazing music and a Son et Lumiere (sound and light show). The Poole Passion is becoming a cultural part of the landscape of Poole.
This year TPP will be running workshops at Poole High School and St. Aldhelm’s Academy, Routes to Roots for the homeless and working with Action on Addiction in Bournemouth.
